Archaeological Investigations Within the Proposed U.S. 61 Corridor North of Canton in Lewis and Clark Counties Missouri, Volume III: Sites Subject to National Register Evaluation and Limited Data Recovery

Archaeological investigations in conjunction with the U.S. 61, Avenue of the Saints (AOS) highway reconstruction project in Lewis and Clark Counties, Missouri, were conducted by Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc., under contract with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) (Job Numbers J3P0424B and J3P0423B).  Fieldwork began in November of 2004 and continued through August of 2006. Details of the investigations are being reported in 10 volumes.  This volume details the investigations undertaken at a number of sites within the project area that did not undergo extensive excavations.  The investigations at the sites discussed in this volume were limited due to either the sites not containing significant archaeological deposits, or because significant archaeological deposits were not located within cut areas at the site.

The focus of this volume is the presentation of the results of the analyses and excavations at the sites that underwent limited investigations.  Twenty-five sites, 13 within Lewis County and 12 within Clark County, are included in this volume.  The thirteen sites within the Lewis County portion of the project area are 23LE342, 23LE44/319, 23LE170, 23LE168, 23LE169, 23LE327, 23LE45, 23LE378, 23LE346, 23LE365, 23LE369, 23LE371, and 23LE373. The twelve sites within the Clark County portion of the project area are 23CK243, 23CK244, 23CK273, 23CK274, 23CK280, 23CK281, 23CK286, 23CK267, 23CK299, 23CK312, 23CK64, and 23CK66.  Due to the limited nature of significant deposits or limited excavations at the sites, much of this volume is descriptive in nature.  Only minor amounts of information could be compiled from these sites to address questions presented in the Research Design (see Volume I of the AOS series).

The remainder of this report provides details concerning the excavation methods used, the analyses conducted, and the results of the investigations at each of the sites.  Background materials (i.e., project overview, cultural history, research design) were presented in Volume I of this series.  Environmental data for the AOS project is detailed in Volume II of this series.
