Why is MoDOT doing this project?

MoDOT is taking steps to improve Route 71 to interstate standards from I-44 south of Carthage to Kansas City.

What is happening in Cass County?

To meet interstate standards, MoDOT must eliminate more than 20 at-grade crossings in four counties (Barton, Vernon, Bates and Cass counties).

Three of those crossings – 283rd Street, 307th Street and 327th Street – are in Cass County. The crossings at at 283rd Street and at 327th Street are being replaced by bridges over Route 71, with no access to 71.

The crossing at 307th will be a full interchange, with ramps to and from Route 71. Outer roads will connect 283rd Street and 327th Street with interchanges to the north and south.

Radmacher Construction Co. has been awarded the contract for all three.

While elimination of three at-grade intersections are the only major changes necessary to raise Route 71 to interstate standards in the Kansas City District, other improvements are either recently completed, soon to be under way or considered along the corridor from Harrisonville to Kansas City.

How will this project benefit me?

Upgrading Route 71 to I-49 will bring it to interstate standards, making the interstate smoother, safer, and more uniform.

What is the project schedule? 

These new overpasses will be completed by the end of 2012. This is part of a broader effort by Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri to complete I-49 from New Orleans to Kansas City.
