MoDOT Sweeps Statewide Recycling Awards, Again
Gov. Nixon Presents the Statewide Awards for Individual and Team Recycling Efforts

JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri State Recycling Program may need to start recycling their yearly awards. For the second time, the Missouri Department of Transportation has received both the individual and state agency recycling awards for outstanding contributions made in the areas of recycling collection and waste reduction.

This year's winners are Curtis Dowden, MoDOT senior materials inspector, and MoDOT's New Franklin Parkway Project team. Dowden started a plastics recycling program two years ago in Willow Springs. He collects an average of 70 pounds of plastic each week from various MoDOT locations. Dowden's efforts have proven to decrease trash hauling costs and the amount of plastic headed for the landfill.

The New Franklin Parkway Project involved removing a bridge over the Katy Trail and recycling thousands of tons of demolition debris. Recycling became part of the initial planning process for removing this bridge, resulting in significant savings and preventing 10,000 tons of material from going to a landfill.

Here are some other New Franklin Parkway Highlights:

*5,200 tons of crushed concrete was used for roadway base ($25,000 savings)

*3,000 tons of crushed concrete remains nearby for future maintenance

*120 feet of bridge rail was reused as a pedestrian fence

*The salvage value of scrap metal lowered overall project cost

These two significant statewide recycling awards add to MoDOT's overall goal to being green. Since 2005, MoDOT has recycled more than 8.5 billion pounds of waste.
