Amtrak Ridership Up Nine Percent on

St. Louis to Kansas City Corridor

JEFFERSON CITY – With gas prices hovering between $2 - $3 a gallon, state transportation officials are seeing a nine percent increase in train passengers traveling in Missouri over Amtrak’s St. Louis to Kansas City corridor.  This route includes stops in St. Louis, Kirkwood, Washington, Hermann, Jefferson City, Sedalia, Warrensburg, Lee’s Summit, Independence and Kansas City.

“Ridership on the St. Louis to Kansas City corridor is much higher than last year at this time,” said Multimodal Director Brian Weiler. “Ridership numbers have been particularly strong on weekends and holidays.  We’re pleased that travelers see Amtrak as a valuable transportation option.”

The route carried 66,813 passengers during the first four months of fiscal year 2006 (July – October 2005).  For the same period last year, the route carried 60,473 passengers.

Weiler cited the train’s many benefits, including low fares and easy travel for those who prefer not to drive, and amenities such as plug-ins for laptop computers and using personal DVD players. “They also enjoy the route’s beautiful scenery and the space to get up and move about,” he added.

Round-trip train tickets between St. Louis and Kansas City start at $35.  Passengers are encouraged to purchase tickets early to obtain the lowest fares. Reservations are required.  Discounts are available for seniors, students, veterans, groups and AAA members.  For tickets or information on discounts and special fares, visit www.amtrak.com or call 1-800-USA-RAIL (872-7245).

The Missouri legislature provides financial support to the Missouri Department of Transportation for Amtrak to provide intercity rail passenger service between St. Louis and Kansas City.
