MACON/HANNIBAL – Last fall MoDOT reached a milestone on the US 36 corridor project to construct the last 52-miles of four-lane highway between Macon and Hannibal. The project surpassed the halfway mark shortly after opening the stretch of roadway between Monroe City and Hannibal.

Fortunately the contractors were able to continue to make additional progress during the winter months, and now the entire project is 60% complete. What’s also exciting is that the section between Shelbina and Monroe City is expected to be open to traffic by November of this year.  Working through the winter months has kept the project on track to meet the completion commitment date of December 2010.

“We anticipate having the entire corridor open to traffic by July 2010,” said District Engineer Dan Niec.  “When we began this project we had planned to have all lanes open to traffic an entire year earlier than promised. Unfortunately last year’s construction season was extremely challenging due to unusually heavy rainfall and localized flooding. Even with the unexpected weather delays we will complete the project six months earlier than promised.”

Latest Updates:

Shelbina to Monroe City:

• Weather permitting paving operations will begin from Monroe City and continue to the west. Contractor will be hauling excess soil off of project site, trimming soil, laying base road and paving concrete in Shelby County, weather and site conditions permitting.
• This section is scheduled for completion November 2009.

Macon to Shelbina:

• The contractor is continuing to install drainage structures at various locations throughout the project. 
• Construction is nearing completion on 3 bridges - Route 36 over the Middle Fork of Salt River, Route 36 over Crooked Creek, and Route 151 over Route 36.  Construction has begun on Route 36 over Route FF near South Shelby High School.
• Earthwork operations continue to move forward. 
• The construction of the Route 151interchange is progressing.
• This section scheduled to be open to traffic July 2010.

MoDOT thanks taxpayers in Marion, Monroe, Shelby and Macon Counties who passed a one-half cent, 15-year sales tax in 2006 to fund half of the entire project’s cost. Without their support we would not be gaining this important upgrade to the US 36 corridor.
