U.S. 136:  The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced the bridge on U.S. 136 Highway over the Little Tarkio Creek (approximately six miles east of Route 59 at Tarkio) in Atchison County is scheduled for replacement in 2012.  This project will involve the removal and replacement of the existing bridge. Construction will begin in the summer of 2012. The construction is estimated to take approximately five months. U.S. 136 Highway will be closed to through traffic with a signed detour provided. The proposed detour will be:  Route M north to Route C then east on Route C to Route YY, then south on Route YY to U.S. 136.  Property owners, within the project limits, will have access to their properties during construction. Any person affected by this project may request maps, plans or other detail information by contacting MoDOT Transportation Project Manager Gregory Anderson at:  1-888-ASK-MoDOT (1-888-275-6636).

Interstate 29 Welcome Center:  The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that construction on the new Welcome Center on Interstate 29 in Atchison County near the town of Rock Port, MO is scheduled to begin this fall. Construction is being funded through a Federal Enhancement Funding Grant that can only be used for projects of this type and cannot be used for the building or repair of highways. The contract for construction of the new facility has been awarded to Loch Sand and Construction Co. of Maryville, MO. in the amount of $5,121.032.20 with a notice to proceed date of August 8th. The staff of the Division of Tourism facility currently in Rock Port, will be temporarily relocated to the southbound Mound City rest area during construction. It is anticipated they will be able to take residence in the new facility sometime in mid-2012. Final completion of the building is expected in December of 2012.  The theme of the new building is "Energy Conservation and Alternative Energy: Past & Present." In line with that theme, MoDOT is seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. According to their website: "LEED is an internationally-recognized green building certification system which provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions."
The new facility will feature aspects of alternative energy and conservation in addition to improved accommodations for travelers, an expanded tourism facility, and an enlarged parking area for passenger cars, travel trailers and semi-trailer trucks.
A groundbreaking ceremony is being planned for later this year.

Route A and U.S. 69 - Motorists in Harrison County and specifically the Bethany area will begin encountering work zones beginning Wednesday, May 16, across Route A as crews begin prepping the road for an upcoming resurfacing project, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation. Portions of Route A and U.S. Highway 69 will both be prepped and resurfaced in the coming weeks, providing smoother-riding roads for area drivers. The entire project should be complete by mid to late June.
From daylight till sundown, motorists may encounter crews in various locations on Route A and U.S. Hwy 69 through Saturday, May 19, prepping these roads for resurfacing. Beginning Monday, May 21st, crews will begin paving U.S. Hwy 69 South starting at the Route A/U.S. Hwy 69 intersection.
After paving on U.S. Hwy 69 is complete, crews will begin paving Route A, starting at the intersection of Routes A and B. Paving will be done on both lanes moving east to west. Sections of the road will be closed, three to five miles at a time, to allow the contractor to complete paving the entire roadway width. Motorists will need to find an alternate route during these periods. Home owners and emergency vehicles will be accommodated for local access as needed.
As part of these improvements, on June 4th there will be a new expansion device installed in the bridge on Route A over Interstate 35. Until the contractors pave this area, "bump" signs will be in place to make travelers aware of the rough pavement. Crews also will begin work on the spur of U.S. Hwy 69 and U.S. Hwy 136. On June 4th we will start the work on the Spur of 69 and 136. At that time the expansion on U.S. Highway 136 will be modified
