Amendment 3 Project Information

For The St. Louis Region

smoother, safer, sooner

On January 14, 2005 the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission gave the go-ahead to more than $170 million in projects that will bring the busiest highways in the St. Louis region up to good condition and speed up completion of some of the area’s highest-priority road and bridge construction projects. The improvements, known as the Smoother, Safer, Sooner program, are made possible by voter passage of Amendment 3 in November 2004.

About $82 million will fund 54 projects in the Smooth Roads Initiative – the first element of the Smoother, Safer, Sooner program. This initiative will provide 2,200 miles of smoother pavement, brighter road markings and other safety improvements on the state's most heavily traveled highways in three years. The remaining $90 million will accelerate the funding of 16 projects currently funded in later years of the Transportation Improvement Program. These projects will be completed sooner because of Amendment 3 funding.

"This is great news for the entire St. Louis metropolitan region," said MoDOT St. Louis District Engineer Ed Hassinger. "The projects approved today will improve pavement for a smoother drive, as well as provide brighter stripes and signs, reflective pavement markers separating lanes, improved shoulders with rumble strips, and safer guardrails. Drivers will see these benefits sooner because of their support of Amendment 3."
