Tips to navigate through lane closures on I-64 downtown
Best and worst times to travel through downtown project (May 22)
Work has begun on construction on the westbound bridge's driving surface. One lane will be closed, around the clock, on westbound I-64 from early May to late September. Crews will work on the center lane first, then move to the right lane, and finally to the left lane. Work on westbound I-64 will require about 10 full weekend closures of the westbound interstate to complete.
Work begins on eastbound I-64 in late August and continues through late October. It will also require a full lane closure, around the clock on eastbound I-64. Crews will start in the center lane, then move to the right lane and finally complete work on the left lane. Work on eastbound I-64 will also require several full interstate closures.
Currently, the schedule calls for the following weekend closures of I-64. The exact closure times for each weekend has not yet been determined and all closure dates are subject to change:
Westbound I-64
- June 1-3
- June 22-24
- July 13-15
- July 27-29
- August 10-12
- August 24-26
- September 14-16
Eastbound I-64
- October 12-14
- October 19-21
Why are Improvements Needed on I-64's Double Deck Bridge from 21st Street to the Poplar Street Bridge?
The I-64 double deck approach to the Poplar Street Bridge extends from 21st Street to the bridge. This structure is in a double deck configuration from approximately 14th Street to Broadway. The bridge was opened to traffic in November 1967 and is over 43 years old. The double deck needs to be rehabilitated to ensure a longer lifespan. The expansion joints in between the bridge decks also need to be replaced because they are in poor condition due to age.

What Improvements Will MoDOT Accomplish?
- Repair the driving surface lanes and put a new concrete surface on it to gain a longer year lifespan up to approximately 25 years.
- Replace 37 expansion joints.
- Repair remaining drainage structures on and below the bridge decks.

How Will Traffic Be Impacted?
Traffic will be impacted by various lane closures on weekdays and weekends while crews repair the I-64 double deck bridge. Interstate 64 will be fully closed for several weekends while the work is occurring between 21st Street and the Poplar Street Bridge.
