St. Charles Rock Road (Route 180) Pavement Improvement Project

General Intent of the Project

The Missouri Department of Transportation is implementing the first phase of a project to address the aging pavement on St. Charles Rock Road (Route 180) from I-270 to the St. Louis City limits.  As part of the project, the Department will upgrade existing sidewalk along the corridor to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. The corridor contains numerous pavement deficiencies, aging traffic signals and lacks connectivity along and across the corridor for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Project Corridor Details

The project will bring improvements to the St. Charles Rock Road corridor from I-270 to the St. Louis City limits. Construction will be completed in two phases to address the aging pavement along the corridor. Phase I focuses on St. Charles Rock Road from I-170 to the St. Louis City limits and Phase II from I-270 to I-170. MoDOT engineers are still working through details on Phase II and will provide additional information when it is available.

What are the potential solutions?

The Missouri Department of Transportation is planning a pavement improvement project for the corridor that may include:

  • Pavement resurfacing and new pavement markings along the corridor
  • A lane reduction between Normandy Avenue and the St. Louis City limits to increase safety of all modes of travel
  • Upgrading the existing sidewalk to meet ADA requirements
  • Adding sidewalks along the corridor to accommodate pedestrians along St. Charles Rock Road
  • Improve signalized intersections from I-170 to Kienlen Avenue
  • Adding mid-block pedestrian crossings along the corridor
  • Drainage system improvements
  • Adding dedicated bike lanes throughout most of the corridor

What is the timeline?

Design Complete Spring 2020
MoDOT acquires Right-Of-Way Summer 2018 - Spring 2020
Construction Underway Summer 2020 - Fall 2021

*Note: all timeline milestones are subject to change

How much will this project cost ?

Phase I of this project is expected to cost $12.8 million.
