Route 21 Project Update

The Rte. 21 project includes the relocation and improvement of Rte. 21 from Schenk Road to DeSoto with four lanes and limited access.

PROJECT DETAILS:

  • Construction on a new four-lane divided highway began in Summer 2006 and is expected to be complete by the end of 2008.

Route 21 from Lake Lorraine to Hayden Road

  • This new segment of roadway will be 3.44 miles long.
  • Motorists will have access to the new highway from a new interchange at Old 21 near Lake Lorraine and from a new diamond interchange at Hayden Road.
  • The $25.1 million project was awarded to Fred Weber, Inc. on June 13. This project is using Amendment 3 funds.

Ribbon cutting ceremony on Route 21 at Hayden Road

Local, state, and county officials joined MoDOT in a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday, June 4, 2008, celebrating the opening of Route 21 from Hayden Road to Route A.

  • Work on this segment of roadway is complete. Due to safety concerns, MoDOT will only open the southbound lane between Hayden Road and Route A in June 2008. This stretch of roadway is 1.4 miles long.

  • The entire new four-lane divided highway is expected to open at the end of 2008.

  • Approximately 14,000 cars a day use Route 21 at this location.
  • The prior Route 21 only had two lanes with very narrow shoulders and several entrances, which results in long traffic delays.
  • The new road provides a much better alignment, which means it is straighter and less hilly with wider shoulders that will improve visibility and safety.

Route 21 from Route B to DeSoto

  • The improvement of the rest of Route 21 from Route B to DeSoto is currently on the region's long range plan of highway projects. This means that the remainder of the projects to improve Route 21 have been approved by the East West Gateway Council of Governments but have not been funded. Each section is scheduled to be constructed as funds become available in the future.
