MoDOT Employees Run for Work Zone Safety
Work Zone 5K, 1 Mile Fun Run Saturday, April 12 in Chesterfield

ST. LOUIS, MO -  MoDOT employees, their families, partners and the public, will run, jog and even walk to honor individuals who have lost their lives in work zones and to keep others safe.

MoDOT's St. Louis Fit 4 Life team will host a Work Zone Awareness 5K Walk/Run in Chesterfield, Saturday, April 12, 2014, to bring attention to increasing number of workers who will be on the roadways, this spring. In late 2013, three fatalities and 411 crashes were recorded in St. Louis work zones.

The group will promote health fitness, safety and memorialize workers and others who have lost their lives in work zones and in the line of duty. The event will wrap up National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 7-11. April is considered the start of construction season across most of the country.

"April is the time construction and maintenance crews are out on the roadways and we do our best to mark our work zones and be visible.  This is the first time we've included the run as part of our efforts to educate the public about work zone safety, and we need motorists to help us. If we all work together, everyone can go home safely," said Tom Blair, MoDOT Assistant District Engineer.

This family friendly walk/run event is open to MoDOT employees, their families/friends and the public. Adult and youth participants can choose the 5K, or 1 Mile Family Fun Run/Walk. The registration fee is $15 for adults and $10 for youth. Participants can register online at: www.fleetfeetstlouis.com/racing/highlighted-races/modot-work-zone-5k. Online registration closes April 7 at midnight. Participants may also sign up on the race day. Entry forms may be mailed with payment to Becky Allmeroth, 1590 Woodlake Drive, Chesterfield, MO. 63017.

Races begin at 8 a.m. at the Transportation Management Center located at 14301 South Outer Forty in Chesterfield. All participants will receive a race T-shirt and medal. Awards will be presented to male and female overall winners, and age category winners.
