Inclement weather continues to delay I-44 lane shifts near Shrewsbury

ST. LOUIS – Continued wet weather had once again delayed construction work starting on I-44 near Shrewsbury.

On Wednesdsay, March 7, the Missouri Department of Transportation will start work on the renovation of the eastbound I-44 bridge over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad at the St. Louis City limits.

Starting at 6 a.m. March 7, crews will close two westbound lanes on I-44 between Jamieson and Shrewsbury. Those lanes will remain closed around the clock through the remainder of the project and should reopen in December 2018.

Crews will close one additional lane on westbound I-44 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night through Friday to set barrier wall. There will be only one open westbound lane each night during this portion of the work. In addition, crews may close one lane on eastbound I-44 outside of rush periods. When that work is completed, as early as the night of March 9, crews will close the ramp from Shrewsbury to eastbound I-44 and one lane on eastbound I-44. They will then shift the remaining three lanes of traffic onto westbound I-44, for the remainder of the project. All I-44 lanes between Jamieson and Shrewsbury and the Shrewsbury ramp should reopen in December 2018.

To detour around the ramp closure, drivers can access eastbound I-44 at Arsenal. The westbound ramp at Shrewsbury will not be impacted by the ongoing construction.

Since there will be two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane closed around the clock, drivers should consider alternate routes, shifting their commute time or telecommuting (if possible) or using transit, carpooling or ride share options to avoid congestion, especially during the evening commute.
