Adopt A Highway Sign

There are nearly 400 groups in the St. Louis metro area who help maintain and beautify our roadsides. Statewide, about 4,700 Adopt-A-Highway groups are responsible for approximately 6,200 miles of Missouri roadway. Their efforts save MoDOT about $1 million each year. There are, however, many more areas in the St. Louis region that need to be adopted.

Adopters have four options:

  1. clean up litter
  2. mow
  3. beautify through landscaping
  4. Grow Native! by planting Missouri wildflowers and grasses.

MoDOT provides adopters with a certificate of appreciation, a safety training video, safety materials, and a sign with the group’s name posted on each end of the adopted highway section. MoDOT provides trash bags and pick up and disposal of the bags of collected litter.

Litter Clean Up Adopters must:

  • adopt at least 1/2 mile of urban roadside or two miles of rural roadside
  • collect litter at least four times a year
  • sign a three-year agreement
  • submit an activity report to MoDOT
  • follow all safety procedures
